Future Direction for Snakes Rising

Several people have recently asked about our future direction so I

thought this may be a good time to share the vision!

First and foremost we are a family. We exist to take care of one
another while we do the, sometimes difficult, work of bringing
ecstatic practice to human beings on the planet. I would never have
guessed this a year or two ago... but most of us are now teachers. We
find that we need each other to create with so we can go back and
teach what we learn together. We ARE the cauldron of transformation!

Snakes Rising is spreading out to encompass a broader region. For that
reason, our own meetings with one another inevitably grow fewer. That
is OK. I am committed to keeping the family in touch! "Snake Central"
will be moving to Columbus OH for a while. That is so we can be closer
to our Pittsburg members, Brea and Bill.

Yust has also asked about his relationship to us. Well... if we can be
in Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus and Pittsburg.... why not New York or
Boston? It was not so long ago that I shared the vision of a "bridge
of ecstasy" spanning from Indiana to the East Coast. Mane was
particularly impressed with the vision if I do remember.

A few things will soon happen to support this new model of Snakes Rising:

When I renew the web page contract I will increase the # of pages. At
that point, web pages will go geographic. One will be dedicated to
each of the areas where our teachers do their work. That way....
schedules for, say Pittsburg, will be separate than schedules for SW
Ohio or Boston or wherever.....

We are also in the process of ordering business cards for our
teachers. The cards will be somewhat uniform but will also have
regional details and contact info. on them.

Finally... as new promotional materials come out (bumper stickers
etc.) they will no longer say "Cincinnati" or even "Ohio." And the
only contact info. on them will be <www.snakesrising.com>

At this point in time, we are welcoming teachers of music and dance
(and probably poetry) to practice and perform with us. And then to go
back to their respective students with our unique brand of ecstatic
practice!

So be it.

A Little Bit of Snakes Rising History

We have moved our main web page and this blog has become a place to learn about the methods and purposes of Snakes Rising.

I have been asked so many times about how we came into existence. Here goes. At the turn of this century... around the year 2000, David and I (with Bobbye Wood and Gini Edwards) were in the midst of founding and leading a chapter of the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans. The chapter was called EarthSpirit and it was housed at and supported by then minister, Annie Foerster, at St. John's Unitarian Universalist Church. Annie had asked us to found the chapter in order to provide earth centered liturgy to the congregation. Outreach was also part of our mission.

Eventually, by about 2002, that out reach took on a life of it's own and a small band of EarthSpirit members went on the road as Snakes Rising. We took this name from several sources. Some of us were practicing kundalini yoga at the time, some of us were studying druidic rites, and still one other was a snake dancer.

We had been dancing, as a group, with the videos of Gabrielle Roth (the Wave series.) This we did in cooperation with Mira Rodwan of Happendance. At the same time we had attracted a second bellydancer named Ishara into our fold. Hence, we started to combine the principles of the Wave with the art of belly dance. Our liturgies became participative as a result.

In June of 2002, Stacy Bartley of the Pagan Community Council of Ohio (PCCO) asked us to come to a festival that he was organizing. It was at that time that Snakes Rising entered the festival circuit never to look back! Our first performance took place at Burgett's Park in Oberlin. We have returned there for subsequent gigs and it is one of our favorite venues.

The founders of Snakes Rising were, at this time, doing some pioneer work in a community called Tantra Heart. It is an branch of Tantrika International. The group studies Ipsalu Tantra Kriya Yoga under the guidance of Richard and Antoinette Asimus. The practice of this yoga, and it's approaches to Ecstatic Dance, are woven into the work of Snakes Rising in a way that is undefinable yet palpable.

Over the last two years, Snakes Rising has attracted many talented dancers and musicians. A few have stayed with us for over a year to comprise what I will call "the core planning team" for the group. Among those are TR and Brea. Newer members that we LOVE to work with (and hope will stay) are Curtis, Bill, Laura, Dawn and, of course Raymere! We are also excited about the troupe, Zulaikhah, that formed out of work with Snakes Rising.

What we have learned through experience is that Snakes Rising thrives best when it is comprised of artists who are not only talented in their music and dance. They also must understand and embrace deep magic and theories of ecstacy. At this time we are blessed to have both.

The future? Snakes Rising has really been forced to step away from it's very local definition. It's been great to serve the pagan community of Cincinnati. It was with great pleasure that we donated time to Cincy's Pagan Pride Day three years in a row. And, with joy we raised funds for the communities at St. John's and at Robin's Hood. Now our members live in Dayton as much as Cincy. We have members in Columbus as well. A nice, though smallish, following in Northern Ohio is developing as well.

In 2005 we take our workshops, as well as our performances, on the road in Ohio and beyond. Our audiences are expanding to include the New Age and Yoga communities as well as the Pagan and Ecstatic Dance folk. We are proud to have been invited to present and perform for the Association for Consciousness Exploration (ACE) at their Winterstar festival.

Perhaps, what is most exciting for me is the incorporation of Kirtan into our musical repertoire. With it, the awakening process that is Snakes Rising becomes complete:

*Kirtan, and the enactments we perform with it, offer a route to direct awakening of the subconscious through auditory and visual symbolic language.

*Bellydance is a "dance of isolation." It can and does address every muscle and nerve in the body. Hence, when we play and dance to our mid-east and trance rhythms we are awakening the body... every fiber!

*Finally, how could we talk about Snakes Rising without mention of it's earth centered ceremonies and spiral dances? It's where we got our start! It's our way of awakening the earth. We especially love to do this at Beltaine and, this year we will make our third annual appearance around the Beltaine fires at Our Haven in French Lick, Indiana.

May each of us, every day, enjoy awakening of Mind, Body and Earth Spirit.

I will now be using the blog to share and discuss theory and practice within the Snakes Rising Community.

We have added some new teachers, incorporated more Kirtan and launched a new web page this Fall season. It's a busy time for us... we'd like to share that with you.

Check back often. I'll be sharing some of the chants we use in our performances. That way you'll be prepared to sing along.

Autumn into Winter

The Snakes have had a very busy Autumn season. We've been on the road nearly every weekend. Thanks to all who came out to see us and dance with us. Such joy!

Since October 2nd we have been joined by Raymere. We're pleased about that! If you have not yet been out to see him dance with us... make a point of doing that soon. You don't know what you are missing!

We have also returned to our roots a bit and a re-incorporating more Goddess Chants. The feedback on this has been overwhelmingly positive. For that reason we'll be doing at least a little bit of Kirtan at each of our winter gigs.

With All of the Ohio Pagan Pride Days behind us we now turn our attention to two Samhain events (one in Coshocton OH and one in Covington KY) a Psychic Fair (November's Victory of Light) and our New Year's party at Kira's Oasis. Look for a series of winter "Ecstatic Music and Dance" sessions to be scheduled in various parts of Ohio in Jan/ Feb/ Mar 0f 2005. We are expanding to Dayton and Columbus (and possibly Oberlin) next year!

We promote non-lethal control for feral cat colonies and humane methods to reduce the population of feral cats. A feral cat is a domestic cat that has reverted to the wild state after being lost or abandoned, or a cat that has born outside to stray or abandoned cats. O.A.R. has made a difference in the lives of over 1,100 abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens in over 20 Cincinnati neighborhoods.

Return from The Greening and gear up for the Faerie Fest

The Snakes want to thank Lonnie and all the PCCO planners for inviting us to perform at The Greening. Performing out in the middle of nowhere during a tornado watch and torrential rain was an experience we won't soon forget! Thanks also to Yust for the wonderful Gypsy Dance. Congrats to Bernie on her induction into Snakehood. We are a proud order of Earth Magicians.

Next weekend, on June 5th, catch is in Goebel Park (Covington Mainstrasse) for Faerie Fest. We'll do an introduction to Ecstatic Dance in the afternoon and a performance in the evening. It's all free! See you there!

Return from Beltane at Our Haven, Today, and Gear Up for The Greening

The Snakes have returned from the Beltane celebration at Our Haven in French Lick Indiana. We want to thank Many and Mary Thomas for the wonderful hospitality. The newly electric outdoor stage was delightful to perform on. What an experience to sing to the stars and the Beltane fires!!! We hope to be back next year for a third annual appearance!

Today (May 15th) The Snakes will practice at the CRC and all are welcome to join us for some open dance. 3-5 PM. We will be gearing up for PCCO's Greening so you can expect to see a little of what we'll be doing there.

The Greening happens on Memorial Day Weekend in Hocking Hills. Snakes Rising will perform Sunday evening in the lodge and then lead the procession to the bonfire. We'll also be casting a circle there as we light the ritual fire and prepare for an all night drum and dance circle. Join us if you can!

The weekend was pure ecstasy. Thank you, Victor, for allowing the Snakes to perform and teach at the Victory of Light Festival. VOL is a wonderful event and the folks it draws are incredible to work with. I hope we will see you there again in October!

On the corner of Eden and University Aves. in Corryville. You must join the CRC to get in ($15 a year) or pay as you go ($3 a session.) Hey! Friday March 26 there will be dancing and drumming at Andy's Mediterranean Grill! Not just Middle Eastern Dancing, but at 8pm the show opens with a hip-hop dancer extraordinaire - Diana Ford! Then Myrrha will attempt to perform Moroccan Tray (tray, candles, tea). At 9pm Snakes Rising will start drumming and everyone can move with the rhythm....OR, you can just eat and watch! Everybody is welcome!

The Snakes are Coming!

Today is the big day! All Snakes Festivities begin at 7 PM this evening (March 12th) and run through 11 PM tomorrow. We had a great time decorating The Faerie Realm last evening. Now all that remains is to perform!

Doors open this evening at 5 PM. Show begins at 7 PM. Come join us and stay for an evening that includes some of the best belly dance talent around and a snake dance extraordinaire!

Tomorrow the vending will be stupendous with folks joining us from all over Ohio and Kentucky. Workshops abound. And, don't forget to stay for the evening performance by The Anam Cara Band.

The admission for this event is a mere $10 and will get you in for both days. You'll also be entered in the drawing for some wonderful door prizes from our vendors. Proceeds benefit, in part, Robin's Hood Community Center's food pantry and warming center.

All Snakes Weekend is but two weeks away! Be sure to mark your calendars for the 12th and 13th of March! From the Snakes Rising Music blog, in the left hand column, you can find links to the ASD web page and the Faerie Realm.

This year we are featuring local and regional Shamanic and Trance practitioners. The line-up is incredible!!!! The cost for this weekend is a mere $10. The proceeds will benefit, in part, the Robin's Hood Community Center.

Local Spring Performances and Workshops

Don't forget to check out the All Snakes Day web page, which is linked here in the left hand column. We still have room for a few more vendors. If you have a trance, dance, or serpent related workshop that you'd like to present contact us right away! The dates are March 12 & 13.

On April 3 & 4 Snakes Rising will be at the Victory of Light Festival at the Sharonville Convention Center. You can look for us, vending near the stage, any time during the two day event. On Saturday evening the Snakes will give a performance: 5 PM to close. On Sunday at 4 PM we will offer a two hour trance dance/ ecstatic dance workshop. Watch for the VOL webpage link to go up here soon!

May 1st: Beltane (local) we will celebrate with the Miami University Pagan Student Alliance in Oxford, OH. The tentative time is 4-7 PM. Check back often for details! Or e-mail Sandy at kirchnsr@muohio.edu.

On March 6th, from 3-5 PM, Snakes Rising begins a series of Open Ecstatic Dance Circles to be held at the Cincinnati Recreation Commission's Clifton Branch. The location is at the corner of Eden and University. We'll meet there every other week except when we are performing "away." Other dates already scheduled: March20th and April 17th.

Thanks a bunch to DJ, Jeff Menke, of WNKU who featured TR Ruddick and Patrick McMahon on his "Rainbow Bridge" radio show last night (this morning?) at 12:30. He featured the Snakes Rising: Dance! CD and played "Rompi" after talking about TR on vocals and mandocello. Then he played "Gypsy Fire"... featuring the "virtuoso" harmonica playing of Patrick. Very nice!!! Good mention of the blog, the Faerie Realm and the ASD event as well!!!

All Snakes Day 2004--Dates, Location set

All Snakes Day 2004--the Cincinnati area's best alternative to St. Patrick's Day celebrations--will happen at the Faerie Realm, Covington Ky, on Friday night March 12 and all day Saturday March 13.

A veritable cornucopia of dancing, ritual, music, merchandise, and good fellowship is coming together under the careful guidance of our steering committee. Of course, Snakes Rising plans to bring our best community music and dance into the event. Check back here for more details as they emerge!

New Years Eve Reflections

How to sum up the New Years Eve festivities?

We found Randy and Angie to be fulfilling and reliable percussionists, and we're eagerly looking forward to their future contributions. We also were joined for much of the evening by Nicole Aimee, who appears as guest vocalist on our 2nd cd, and she gave our sound some new dimensions to explore.

Tantra Heart provided warm hospitality, and Dick and Antionette Asimus took us deeply into our spirits through their leadership of the trance dancing and the ritual of the six senses. Even the food for the potluck was inspiring!

Following is information you will find useful in planning your New Year's Eve experience. Note: "What to Bring" list below.

Maitri Center is the location for the celebration. The address is 4120 Hamilton Avenue, across from North Side Bank in the Northside neighborhood of Cincinnati. Call for directions to the Maitri Center. The experience will be held on the 2nd floor. You can park on the street (meters are not in effect at night) and also in the lot of the North Side Bank across the street.

Drinks & Food

Juices, herbal tea, and a sparkling non-alcoholic drink for toasting will be provided. Bottled water will be available to replenish the water bottle you are requested to bring. Dinner plates, napkins & utensils are provided as well as drinking cups. You are invited to bring a potluck dish for sharing. If serving utensils are needed for your dish please bring these too.

Be Present, Honoring Yourself

This experience is BYOE (bring your own energy, whether it is low or high). Be yourself & enjoy connecting warmly with others in the mysteries of the auspicious night. For energy reasons neither alcohol nor mind altering drugs are permitted. Participants must be 18 years or older.

Expand the Field of Love Energy

Invite people you know to join you and the whole group in this energy experiment of love and awareness. People can register up to the last day, even at the door. Registration is $35 up to 3pm on December 31 and $40 at the door. Singles and couples are welcomed. Registrations with payment can made by phone, email or postal service. The Snakes would like to thank the Midnight Muse for a wonderful Open House, and a great place to perform... as well as the perfect shopping venue for upscale pagans ;-) . The mulled wine, and close dancing kept us all warm! We truly enjoyed the company of all present. [Plus, I am thrilled with the beautiful gift I was able to obtain for my dear son and his partner's new home!]

Look for Snakes Rising next weekend at The Faerie Realm in Covington. We will perform on Saturday at ~ 4:30 PM. And our CDs, t-shirts, and bumper stickers will be available as part of the Magickal Mini-Mall. The Snakes would like to thank Victor Paruta for the wonderful hospitality at the Victory of Light festival this weekend! We were all uplifted by the atmosphere and the incredibly receptive audience. Thanks to those who turned out just to dance with us! And especially to the wonderful Cellist who joined us on Sunday!!! (Sorry I can't remember your name.) You can expect future ecstatic endeavors into the Victory of Light..... maybe in April 2004??? Stay tuned.

We have added the Faerie Realm to our very busy list of Holiday Performances. Catch the Snakes at the Magickal Mini Mall on December 13th at ~ 4:30 PM. Congratulations to the Miami University Pagan Student Association for a successful first Pagan Pride Event! Snakes really enjoyed performing at the Earth religions Awareness Festival! Thanks to Brea of Raks Devi for joining us with her sword dancing. We are always happy to have yet another goddess to dance with!

Here is a new date to add to the calendar of Snakes Rising Performances: October 31st, Samhain, at Aquarius Bookstore. Snakes Rising performs from 8-10 PM. Open dancing and costume party. This performance will be followed by a ritual journey across the Mountains of the Hag, through Innana's Descent, and to the Shining Isle.

Elysium, the Earth Religions Awareness Festival, and New Years Eve.

Elysium, hosted by the Twilight Owl Grove of the ADF, was an incredible experience for the Snakes Rising musicians and dancers. The opportunity to dance, under the crescent moon of the 7th lunar cycle cannot be paralleled! The Great Mother smiled upon us with a double rainbow outside the door as we ate dinner and two serpents to dance with us as the performance ended. Thanks to all who made the Goddess Dance possible. Thou art god and goddess to me!

Next weekend, October 4th, the Snakes perform from 4-6 at the Miami University Pagan Student Alliance's Earth Religions Awareness fest. For details check out:

Cincinnati Metro Pagan Pride Day!
"Solitary Lights Uniting Together to Shine as One"

Well, the busy season is upon us Snakes! It begins this weekend with the release of our newest CD "Dance" at Cincinnati's Pagan Pride Day. We'll be performing there twice. At noon with a teaser, and at 7 PM with a full show. Our special guest, The Magnificent Naked Faery King, will join us for both shows. In addition you can visit us at the Snakes Rising table throughout the day. It will be stocked with CDs, Bumper Stickers, t-shirts and Pangea Ceremonial Soaps. Be prepared for spontaneous improv. from our musicians and dancers throughout the day. At 4:30 PM, our dance teacher and choreographer: Lisa Clark, will offer a beginner belly dance workshop. It's all free!!!

Then, this same weekend, Sunday Sept. 14th, find us performing and vending at the Vinoklet Wine festival in Colerain Ohio. We'll be on the upper veranda from 1-3 PM. Admission and Parking are free at this event. If you want free food and wine as well you may contact Paul to volunteer.

It's about time I update our schedule again!

Members of Snakes Rising take part in the "Frolickin' Friday Evenings" drum circle every week at 7PM. At Aquarius Bookstore on Main Street in downtown Cincinnati. Call (513) 721-5193 for information. September 13th, Snakes Rising is once again featured at Cincinnati's Pagan Pride Day event in Covington's Goebel Park. With special guest: The Faery King, who has agreed to grace us with a veil dance! Stay tuned for details as to performance times.

September 14th, Snakes Rising is featured at the Vinoklet Winery's Annual Wine Tasting Festival. We'll perform our unique blend of Mediterranean Music from 1-3 PM on the veranda. Then you can visit our booth to buy Snakes Rising t-shirts, CDs and Bumper Stickers as you enjoy some great artwork by Snakes Rising supporter, Richard Cisneros. October 4th, Snakes Rising at the Oxford Earth Religions Awareness fest hosted by the Miami University Pagan Student Alliance (MUPSA.) Be sure to join us all afternoon! From October 12th through 26th, three Sundays from 2-4 pm, Mike Manor of the RCC will be offering a series on Canaanite Ritual Patterns at St. John's Unitarian Church in Cincinnati. The ritual dances of these pre-biblical people are likely the origins of many of the mid-east dances we celebrate today. Don't miss this exciting series!!!!

Snakes Rising member, Lisa Clark, will offer ongoing classes in "Expression Through Movement for Women" and a New Moms Belly Circle/ Advanced Belly Circle this fall at the Healing Touch Center of Cincinnati. (513) 321-4325 or ltbury@earthlink.net for information.

Snakes Rising member Susan Hergert offers a Pregnancy Belly Circle this fall. Six Sundays beginning October 19th. Focus on "Belly Dance for Optimal Fetal Positioning." There is no class on November 16th, although all participants are welcome to join the ICAN meeting that day from 5-7 PM.

This Memorial Day finds Snakes Rising with a full Weekend music and trance dance! Come hear our musician group: Zenzibar! at The Grailville Coffee House in Loveland Ohio on Saturday Night from 7-9 PM. The usual dancers won't all be there, but feel free to shake it a little yourself!

Then on Sunday night around 10 PM, look us up at the Blue Note Cafe in Price Hill as we groove to the sounds of Funkytown one of our favorite cover bands! On Monday you'll likely catch us under the sun at the Taste of Cincinnati... enjoying two more of our favorite local performers: Leroy Ellington and Robin Lacey.

Any kind of dance can be ecstatic dance, if you know how to ride the wave!
